An abscess can be very painful and needs treating by a dentist as soon as possible. The abscess can be caused by an infected tooth or because of gum disease and typically results in a swollen area that is filled with pus. Depending on the cause and severity of the abscess treatment can include:
– Lancing the abscess to drain pus and other material
– Deep cleaning (root planing) the roots of teeth in the infected area
– Course of antibiotics to prevent infection recurring
If the abscess was caused by infected nerve tissue inside the tooth pulp “root canal therapy may be able to help” and more detailed information can be found at https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/what-is-a-dental-abscess-and-how-is-it-treated/
